John Huckerby

John established POWER PROJECTS in 1999 and acts as consultant and advisor to a range of energy industry companies as well as Government and public sector organizations (see Our Clients).

From 2006 to mid-2013 John was the NZ Government representative to the International Energy Agency's Ocean Energy Systems Implementing Agreement and was Chairman of OES from 2009-2012.  In 2011 he led OES to develop an "International Vision for Ocean Energy", which has been widely circulated internationally.

He founded and was Chief Executive of the Aotearoa Wave and Tidal Energy Association from February 2006 to June 2013.  He was also Secretary and Treasurer of the New Zealand Energy Law Association from 2005 to 2013.  He was also Lead Author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's "Renewable Energy Resources and Climate Change Mitigation".

Previously John worked for Fletcher Challenge Energy, leading the team that evaluated the Mangahewa and Pohokura gas-condensate fields. Before coming to New Zealand, John worked on minerals and hydrocarbon exploration in the United States, Eastern Europe, Saudi Arabia, Scandinavia and the North Sea.

John has a Ph.D. in Economic Geology from the Royal School of Mines at Imperial College in London and an MBA from Henley Management College. He has post-graduate qualifications from Rice University in Houston and Waikato University in New Zealand.

John is a Chartered Engineer, a fellow of the Geological Society and a member of the Energy Institute.  John has served on a number of advisory boards, including the Royal Society of New Zealand's President's Panel for Energy and served as a Scientific Fellow of Food Standards Australia New Zealand for 10 years from 2000.
